How to Care for the Albany Pitcher Plant (Cephalotus follicularis)

The Albany pitcher plant (Cephalotus follicularis) is one of the world's most unique carnivorous plants — found only in a small coastal region of southwestern Australia, it produces charming, intricately lidded pitchers that belie its slow-growing nature. It's a collector's gem and a rewarding long-term grow. Here's how to care for it.

Water

Use reverse osmosis, rain, or distilled water only. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged — top watering works best for Cephalotus. Water every 2–3 days in spring and summer, and every 4–5 days in winter. A shallow tray is fine, but allow it to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root and crown rot. Good drainage is essential.

Light

Cephalotus prefers bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the pitchers. Indoors, a sunny windowsill or a strong grow light both work well.

Temperature

Albany pitcher plants grow well at 15–30°C, suiting most South African climates comfortably. They appreciate mild temperatures and good airflow.

Dormancy

Cephalotus may go semi-dormant in winter, with slowed growth and some pitcher dieback. However, it generally remains evergreen and does not fully die back like temperate carnivorous plants. Simply reduce watering frequency slightly during the cooler months.

Feeding

Cephalotus often catches its own prey. You can occasionally feed small live or dried insects placed into the pitchers — this is optional but supports healthy growth, especially for indoor plants.

Soil

Use a sandy, free-draining mix — a blend of peat moss and coarse sand or perlite works excellently. Good drainage is critical, as Cephalotus is more rot-prone than most carnivorous plants and does not tolerate heavy or waterlogged soil. Repot every 2–3 years during active growth.
