How to Care for Sun Pitchers (Heliamphora)

Sun pitchers (Heliamphora) are among the most ancient and striking carnivorous plants on earth — primitive pitcher plants from the tepuis of South America, with elegant, simple pitchers and a quiet beauty that sets them apart. They're a rewarding challenge for the dedicated grower. Here's how to care for them.

Water

Use reverse osmosis, rain, or distilled water only. Keep the soil consistently moist with excellent drainage — Heliamphora need moisture at the roots but cannot tolerate waterlogged conditions. Unlike most temperate carnivorous plants, they should not sit in a standing water tray. Water regularly from the top and ensure free drainage.

Light

Heliamphora prefer bright, indirect light. Outdoors, a position with filtered light or gentle morning sun works well — avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the pitchers. Indoors, strong grow lights are ideal and produce excellent results.

Temperature

Heliamphora thrive at 15–30°C. They appreciate slightly cooler temperatures than many other carnivorous plants and benefit from a mild temperature drop at night, which mimics their natural high-altitude habitat.

Humidity

Sun pitchers appreciate humidity of 60% or higher, which encourages good pitcher development and keeps the nectar spoon at the top of each pitcher functioning well. A humidity tray, regular misting, or a greenhouse environment all help. They can be gradually acclimated to lower household humidity over time.

Dormancy

Heliamphora do not require true dormancy, but benefit from slightly cooler winter temperatures. They will grow year-round if conditions remain suitable.

Feeding

Heliamphora usually catch their own insects. Indoors, you can occasionally place small live insects inside the pitchers — this is optional but can support healthy growth.

Soil

Use a very airy, free-draining mix — 40% sphagnum peat moss with 60% perlite or pumice works well. Good aeration is critical to prevent root rot. Repot every 1–2 years to maintain healthy growth. Our Airy Carnivorous Plant Mix can be adapted for Heliamphora with additional perlite.
