How to Care for a Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)

Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) are among the most iconic carnivorous plants in the world — and with the right conditions, surprisingly easy to keep. Here's everything you need to grow yours successfully in South Africa.

Water

Keep the pot standing in a tray of reverse osmosis, rain, or distilled water at all times. The soil should stay evenly moist and must never dry out completely. Tap water contains dissolved minerals that accumulate in the soil and will harm the plant over time — always use pure water only.

Light

Place your Venus flytrap outdoors in full sun, receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. This is the single most important factor for healthy trap production and strong growth. Indoor plants on a sunny windowsill will struggle without supplemental lighting.

Temperature

Venus flytraps prefer 20–32°C during the growing season (spring through autumn in South Africa). During winter dormancy, they tolerate and actually require cool temperatures of 0-10°C to rest and regenerate.

Dormancy

In South Africa, Venus flytraps enter winter dormancy roughly from May to August. During this period, plants may lose many leaves and stop producing new traps — this is completely normal and essential for long-term health. Keep plants cool, moist, and in a sheltered spot. They will regrow strongly from September onwards as temperatures rise.

Feeding

When kept outdoors, Venus flytraps will catch their own insects — no manual feeding is necessary. If you'd like to feed them, offer small live bugs once every few weeks per trap. Never feed meat, dairy, or anything other than insects, and avoid triggering traps repeatedly with your fingers as each trap has a limited number of open-and-close cycles.

Soil

Use a 50/50 mix of fertiliser-free peat moss and perlite. Never use standard potting soil, compost, or any fertiliser — the nutrients will damage the roots.
